How It Works

eJunkie will manage the purchase process and then provide the buyer with a download link. The link expires in 5 days and allows for failed downloads during that time period.

Choices: For studio albums we prefer the iTunes Plus codec running at 256kpbs if the source file is sampled higher than 44.1khz. For live albums, which are often sourced from cassette tapes, we prefer MP3 with LAME 3.99.5 and LAME 3.100 in Joint Stereo running at VBR 256kpbs. Download audio at these settings is approaching transparency. We cannot say we prefer one over the other after many hours spent in blind listening tests at Suma. MP3 offers more versatility in difficult situations. There are those who insist that a 320kpbs Constant bit rate is the be all and end all. We don't agree, again, after hours spent in blind listening tests. Neither do the technicians behind LAME and iTunes.

7009Copyright is essentially easy enough to understand. The copyright owner is the only one allowed to make copy of a copyrighted work. You may buy a song file, a copy of the work, from the copyright owner. You own that file but you do not own the right to make a copy of it. Nobody really pays attention unless commerce becomes involved. Say an Ubu fan buys a download album and then makes it into a cd copy with artwork and packaging for his own, non-commercial use. Secretly, we are pleased. To say so would endanger the protection of copyright.

But now we introduce the Pickard Exemption. Under this provision, we grant the right to make one cd copy of our copyrighted download audio along with associated artwork. No further grant of rights is extended or implied, or may be inferred. Where we choose we will include print quality front covers in the copyrighted download package. Copyright of the artwork is retained in whole but the Pickard Exemption applies.

FLAC Fans - Mr Thomas is not a fan of FLAC and other 'lossless' codecs. "I can see the attraction," he explains, "But I am unconvinced. MP3 technology continues to improve, approaching transparency. Nevertheless, for studio recordings I will continue to consider it. This is my art, my life, I pursue the best means of delivering it as the years pass by."

NB. The dates attached to the releases above are the recording dates, not release dates.

If you are concerned about some part of the process, if something is wrong or doesn't look right, or if you have any sort of issue and would like to contact a human being, feel free to email Communex.
